abstract

This collection of abstract works largely consists of my “Leftovers” series. These paintings began as a way to use as much leftover paint from my palette after a day’s work on my regular body of work. I started taking an old painting I wasn’t happy with and just started scraping the tailings from the palette and accumulating the paint over a period of months or years to build up an abstract work. These paintings are thick, textural, and at times bridge between 2D and 3D work. In some of the more recent ones I have incorporated some elements of assemblage/sculpture by mounting some found objects to the panels, inspired by Robert Rauschenberg and Pablo Picasso. These pieces are not pre-designed or intentioned, they simply take shape over time randomly with no specific intention as to where to put colors as they come off the palette. They accumulate until they “feel” finished. In addition to limiting expensive paint waste, these paintings serve as interesting records of all the paint puddles I’ve ever mixed for my regular studio work, every blue sky color I’ve mixed, every red-rock mesa color, every sage green, they’re all recorded in these abstract works.
